Tchaikovsy (1840-1893)
was a Russian composer. He wrote some
really great music (including the music for the ballets, Swan Lake, and The Nutcraker and the famous 1812
Overture, which he composed in 1880).
The 1812 Overture commemorated Russia’s victory over Napoleon’s troops, when they failed to
conquer Russian territory in 1812. The piece lasts about 15 minutes, and is
best known for its grand finale with cannon fire, ringing chimes and brass
